Carbon management: removing emissions

Certain industrial processes inevitably generate CO₂ emissions – for instance, when limestone is burned during cement production. This is where carbon capture and storage (CCS) can make a difference: CO₂ is extracted directly from exhaust gases and safely stored in geological formations, preventing its release into the atmosphere.

Decarbonising emission-intensive industries

CCS is an effective climate tool for sectors such as metal and chemical manufacturing – particularly where clean electricity or green hydrogen is not available in sufficient quantities. With CCS, even fossil fuels can be used in a nearly climate-neutral way.

Raw material for climate-friendly products

Captured carbon can also be used as a raw material – for example, in the production of plastics. While today’s carbon compounds largely originate from fossil sources, tomorrow’s climate-friendly products could be based on CO₂ and biomass.
