ACTIVITIES

Pipelines and storage

The SEFE Group’s storage and transport infrastructure connects Europe’s energy markets – strengthening supply security and enabling both short-term agility and long-term resilience. Designed to support natural gas, green gases and LNG, it is an integral part of today’s energy system. At the same time, we’re laying the groundwork for hydrogen transport and storage – advancing Europe’s path towards a climate-neutral energy future.
Through our storage affiliates, we market approximately seven billion cubic metres of working gas across four locations – accounting for more than 25% of Germany’s total storage capacity. While porous storage facilities ensure maximum flexibility to meet seasonal demand, cavern reservoirs can swiftly balance short-term grid fluctuations. In tandem with the SEFE Group’s transmission networks, these assets are a cornerstone of Europe’s energy security and dependable market conditions.

SEFE Storage | Storage services
SEFE owns transmission networks spanning around 4,200 kilometres across Germany, making a key contribution to a reliable and efficient gas supply. These networks connect markets, enhance flexibility and security of supply, and serve as indispensable links within the broader European energy infrastructure.

Hydrogen is poised to play a pivotal role in tomorrow’s energy supply. That’s why we’re advancing the JemgumH₂ hydrogen storage facility, opening strategic import corridors in the North Sea and Baltic Sea regions, and upgrading the existing grid infrastructure. Simultaneously, we’re expanding our technical and logistical capacities to support the integration of green gases – as part of our commitment to a future-proof energy system.

ORGANISATION

Our
assets

In the infrastructure sector, SEFE delivers its services through specialised subsidiaries: SEFE Storage manages storage operations, while GASCADE, NEL and AquaDuctus operate pipeline networks. Each unit operates independently and autonomously, yet they are strategically aligned under the umbrella of one holding company. This organisational structure ensures clarity, coordination and impact.
SEFE owns the gas storage and network operators SEFE Storage, GASCADE and NEL and is a joint venture partner in EKB Storage. While these companies operate independently, their strategic direction is centrally coordinated. This synergy enables integrated storage and transport solutions that actively support the transformation of the energy system in Germany and across Europe.
Through its subsidiary SEFE Storage and the joint venture EKB Storage, the SEFE Group markets around seven billion cubic metres of gas storage across four locations: Jemgum, Rehden and Etzel in Germany, and Haidach in Austria. Operating independently, these companies play a critical role in ensuring energy security during peak demand and enhancing the flexibility of the energy system.

Across Europe, SEFE facilitates the flow of energy, connecting producers and traders with consumers. This high-performance transmission network, operated by GASCADE and NEL, ensures a reliable supply of natural gas – both now and for the future. By converting existing infrastructure and building pioneering hydrogen pipelines, we’re contributing to the energy transition and opening import corridors for hydrogen in the North Sea and Baltic Sea regions.
